Research and Collaboration
Technical Consultancy Services
As an industry leader in providing technical consultancy services to the coal, power, engineering, minerals and manufacturing sectors, HRL undertakes a variety of research and development projects for the benefit of its clients. Such projects span the spectrum from long-term strategic research to tactical short-term projects to develop new products and services.
In addition to contracted research and development activities, research activities are also undertaken in collaboration with education institutions, and various industrial partners. Examples of this are various projects under the Victorian Government's Energy Technology Innovation Strategy Research and Development Program (ETIS R&D).
Some of the research projects undertaken for clients include long-term strategic research with the potential to develop low-emission power generation from brown coal. Other research projects have a more tactical focus to deliver tangible results in the short term. An example of tactical research was the development of HRL's Attemperator Spray System, which involved developing the use of water spray to cool exhaust gases in power generation systems. In this case, HRL developed an innovative, tailored, system for use in large power generation systems. This technology has been installed at a large power station and has proven to be particularly effective and cost-efficient.
