Gas Testing Services

HRL’s gas sampling and analysis services provide expert support to the gas industry and consumers. Our NATA accredited Gas Testing Laboratory helps clients to maintain critical quality control of their products including natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, reformed gas and hydrogen.

Our gas services include:

• sampling from low pressure gas lines to high-pressure mains
• precise testing of hydrocarbons, hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide
• heating value, Wobbe index and relative density calculations
• sulphur composition, hydrogen sulphide, carbonyl sulphide
• mercaptan odorant analysis (tertiary-butyl mercaptan and tetrahydrothiophene) and organoleptic testing.

Gas producers face several challenges in maintaining the quality of their products to ensure efficient production is achieved, regulatory standards are met, and safety is maintained.

Gas consumers need to ensure that the quality of their gas supply meets their requirements.

The composition of fuel gases, in conjunction with their associated physical properties, are used to ascertain regulatory and quality compliance for distributed natural gas and LPG, and environmental regulations of refinery gas outputs.

Utilising specialist instrumentation and equipment, HRL can provide extensive analytical and testing capabilities in gas analysis. This service provides gas producers with high-quality analysis of the gas products they produce and supply.

HRL can enable its clients to meet these challenges by carrying out sampling programs to clients requirements providing independent expert analytical testing services to accurately determine chemical composition and physical properties of gaseous samples.

The HRL analytical team provided all analysis
services for the J-Power Latrobe Valley gasification
and hydrogen refining pilot plant.  This included
collection and analysis of both solid and gas samples.
In the case of hydrogen gas quality, the target purity
was 99.999%. A sound sampling methodology
and specialist techniques were required
to determine hydrogen purity at such high levels
and the gas contaminants at very low concentrations.
